According to the Salisbury Post, Democrats in the state Senate have proposed $200 tax rebates for drivers in North Carolina.
Senate Minority Leader Dan Blue and other Democrats held a news conference on this topic. They urged Republicans to consider the “gas tax rebate” legislation. If it gets passed everyone 18 years and older with a valid North Carolina driver’s license will be eligible.
The $200 dollars would come in a check or debit card. They say it could be used for anything. My question is doesn’t pumping money into the economy drive inflation? Isn’t that part of the reason we are in the situation we are in today? Wouldn’t lowering the gas tax be more effective? It would help the people who drive more, and not just send 200 dollars to someone who doesn’t drive much at all?
House Speaker Tim Moore and Senate leader Phil Berger say that the GOP might consider some kind of one-time rebate but more permanent tax relief is preferred. “I would like to see something that’s a little more broad-based and long-lasting as opposed to a temporary thing that may help with one tank of gas or two.”
