Most of us have likely gotten used to paying a higher price than normal for food, wine, clothes, cars and of course, gas. But how about perfume? The beauty experts say the price of your favorite high-end fragrance is up 21%. That means some of you may have to spend up to $300 for a bottle of Chanel.

Why The Demand

The good and surprising news is American consumers are doing just that. They are spending big bucks to smell good. And it's not just smelling good that consumers want. Beauty industry insiders say with the stress of the pandemic, people want to treat themselves. They want to experience happiness during these difficult times.

Larissa Jensen, NPD (market and search firm) vice president and beauty industry advisor says "Scents allow us to escape, even momentarily, and experience a different emotion."
The experts surmise that the pandemic has created a shift in consumer behavior. In times of stress and uncertainty, there's a need for comfort. And that's why the experts say people have been more willing to splurge on self-care purchases like luxury fragrances.
The experts say consumers want a scent that is unique and made with more refined ingredients. For example, they are purchasing the eau de parfums because they typically have a higher percentage of fragrance oils which makes the scent last longer.
According to NPD, fragrance sales have boomed over the last year. The average retail price for fragrances rose by 15% in 2021 compared to 2020. And fragrances priced over $175 grew even more. Those scents more than doubled in the number of units sole last year, according to an NPD report.

The Future of Luxury Fragrance

Despite the increased price tag on high-end fragrances, beauty industry professionals are optimistic about its future. They believe luxury fragrances will continue to grow through innovative marketing strategies. They reason consumers want more luxury in their lives and are willing to pay the price -- at least for now.

The consumer can look for more fragrance incentives like sampling, gifting, and engagement through personalized virtual consultations.
