Drake Has Been Sued For A Third Time Over Song Samples
Drake is being sued for the third time over the samples he used in “Nice For What” and “In My Feelings.”
Both of the No. 1 hit songs were released on his fifth studio album Scorpion in 2019. However, Sam Skully (real name Samuel Nicholas III) claims that Drake sampled aspects of his 2000 song “Roll Call (Instrumental)” in the respective tracks, per Uproxx. Although both Skully’s first and second cases were dismissed, the rapper is now going for the “Certified Lover Boy” for a third time.
According to Billboard, Skully is suing the Toronto rapper for copyright infringement over those songs. In the lawsuit, Skully is also suing Drake’s producer BlaqNmilD, (real name Adam J. Pigott); he believes the producer sampled “Roll Call (Instrumental)” on the aforementioned tracks, but that he additionally sampled it for songs by other artists he worked with besides Drake. However, Pigott’s manager says that both he and Skully used the same sample from a 1986 record by Queens hip hop duo The Showboys.
BlaqNmilD’s manager Craig E. Baylis said, “It is this song, ‘Drag Rap (Triggerman),’ that Adam had indeed sampled for the compositions in question. The Showboys will attest that Adam ensured that they were contacted for all proper clearances. Our question is, has the plaintiff done the same?”
As of now, representatives for Drake and Warner Music Group, the parent company of the songs’ publishers, did not respond to Billboard’s request for comment on the ongoing legal issue.
