Cam Newton Nominated For North Carolina Order Of Long Leaf Pine
Cam Newton has been nominated for the North Carolina Order Of Long Leaf Pine Award. The award is presented by North Carolina Governors and originated in 1963. According to the awards website, The Order of the Long Leaf Pine award is “for persons who have made significant contributions to the state and their communities through their exemplary service and exceptional accomplishments.”
Newton was nominated by Alma Adams who represents North Carolina’s 12th district in the House of Representatives. She suggested that Governor Roy Cooper bestow the honor on the Panthers quarterback as a result of his positive representation of the state on the national stage. She also nominated Newton for a similar award in South Carolina the Order of The Palmetto.
Previous winners of the North Carolina Order Of Long Leaf Pine can be found here. It includes such notable names as Dale Earnhardt, Andy Giffith, and Michael Jordan. While I can certainly say Newton has fit the bill of this award the timing seems interesting IMO. Newton returned to the Panthers organization this past season and started a handful of games. It remains to be seen if he will be a member of the team for the 2022 season. It seems to me this award would have made more sense a few years ago when Netwon and the Panthers were thriving. Regardless his impact on the community here will be felt for years to come. Will Cam Netwon be the newest recipient of the North Carolina Order of Long Leaf Pine? At this point only Governor Cooper knows.
