Search Continues For Missing Pageland, SC Woman Some Say Is An Example Of “Missing White Woman Syndrome”
An African-American mother from Pageland, SC has been missing since September 3. Police say they have no clues as to her whereabouts. Few media outlets have touched it.
On the West Coast, a 22-year-old White woman (Gabby Petito) went missing for a few days, a massive search ensued and made international headlines. And that, according to sociologist Zack Sommers is what is called the “Missing White Woman Syndrome.” It’s the concept by which media will give more attention to missing White women or girls than they do Black or Brown women or girls. “The White Woman Syndrome” is a phrase first coined by the late PBS Anchor, Gwen Ifill.
Nonetheless, the Pageland, SC woman – Deidre Reid remains missing. Police say they have named a person of interest. He is Emanual Bedford. But, at this writing, he is not in custody.
