Charlotte Rescue Mission Gearing Up For $25 Million Transformation
The Charlotte Rescue Mission is gearing up for a $25 Million Transformation to increase its reach in uptown Charlotte. The charity recently launched a capital campaign focused on revitalizing, not replacing, its men’s shelter located on the edge of uptown. The campaign is titled “Miracle at Cedar Street”.
The convenient, easy to locate, prime location of the men’s shelter paired with its rich history prioritizes its retention. The Charlotte Rescue Mission is at the corner of West 1st and Cedar Street and dates back around 100 years. It was first constructed as a Southern Spindle & Flyer Company building in 1920. The campaign aims to raise $25 million to remodel the campus. They hope to gain more, desperately needed space as well as creating a modern, inviting space for those who need help in our community.
What exactly is the Charlotte Rescue Mission? According to their website, the Charlotte Rescue Mission is a leader in providing f”ree, Christian-based residential recovery programs that help people struggling with the disease of addiction achieve long-term sobriety, find employment and stable housing, and restore and build healthy relationships.”
According to the campaign site, these are the goals for the money:
- Dormitory spaces that will allow us to serve more than 100 additional men each year.
- Counseling spaces to provide small private rooms for one-on-one intensive counseling and additional group rooms for the daily group work that is part of our 12-Step recovery model.
- Admissions area with a private waiting room for new residents and their families to better maintain confidentiality and dignity while taking the important first step in getting help.
- Dining room large enough for all the Rebound men to eat together and still have room for volunteers to serve and interact. This new dining room will also serve as flex space for large meetings, community events, and special meals.
- Flex spaces for small group classes that will enhance our program and help our residents learn to thrive in our community, including budgeting/finance, credit repair, anger management, and parenting.
- Medical offices where our nurses can deliver a higher level of care for our residents and allow us to expand our partnerships with doctors and medical providers who come onsite to provide additional services.
- An energy-efficient building with reduced utility costs and new, built-in technology to improve the security and safety for residents and staff.
Currently, the “Miracle at Cedar Street” has raised 42% of the $25 million goal. This includes donations from corporate sponsors such as Truist, Coca-Cola Consolidated, Ally, and others. Notable contributions have also been made from former Charlotte mayor Harvey Gantt and Heath Campbell of Truist.
