Former President Barack Obama will help grow the game of basketball in the motherland.
Obama’s involvement will “help advance the league’s social responsibility efforts across the continent, including programs and partnerships that support greater gender equality and economic inclusion”. Over time, He also plans to utilize the minority stake to fund Obama Foundation youth and leadership programs across Africa.
“I’ve been impressed by the league’s commitment to Africa, including the leadership shown by so many African players who want to give back to their own countries and communities,” Obama said in the NBA’s press release.
He joins former NBA stars Grant Hill, Dikembe Mutombo, Joakim Noah, and others in increasing access to basketball and the NBA in Africa through social responsibility, corporate partnerships, and other initiatives.
Considering Obama’s well-documented love of all things basketball, this sounds like a match made in heaven.
