Another Charlotte Iconic Restaurant, Zack’s Hamburgers, Is Closing
There was a huge ruckus last week in Charlotte when after 60 plus years, Price’s Chicken Coop closed its doors forever. People waited in line for hours to get one more box of chicken. Today it was announced that another long-standing Charlotte restaurant will be closing its doors.
After 46 years in Charlotte, Zack’s Hamburgers is closing this Thursday, July 1. Zack’s is located on the corner of Scaleybark and South Boulevard and has been serving Charlotte customers since 1975. The family-owned and operated restaurant was founded by James and Anna Demopolous with their three kids who all worked there, Bessie, Zack, and George. Fifteen years later, George took over the business with his wife Elaine.
Zack’s has served burgers, hotdogs, onion rings, fries, and milkshakes to regular customers and out-of-towners for a long time. It’s one of “the” places to eat in Charlotte. Just last week the restaurant made a list of the 17 oldest restaurants in Charlotte. I’ve passed by Zack’s so many times, but I’ve never eaten there. Now, if I’m gonna try one of their famous burgers, I need to hurry! The Zack’s Special is two 100% beef patties with double American cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onion, mayonnaise, and special sauce on a toasted bun. It’s served with fries, and if you wanna splurge, then get a milkshake too!
After the pandemic, the Dempoulous family has decided to close the business. Demopolous told CharlotteFive last Monday, June 21, that vulnerabilities have surfaced with COVID. So many of Charlotte’s old school places have closed within the last year due to COVID-19. It’s sad to see so many iconic Charlotte staples shut their doors for good.
If you’d like to get one last taste, Zack’s is located at 4009 South Blvd. and open from 11 a.m-7 p.m.
