Black History Month Features Former NFL Player And Author, Malcom Mitchell
Malcolm Jarod Mitchell (born July 20, 1993) is an author, poet, and a former American football wide receiver. He was drafted by the New England Patriots in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He played college football at the University of Georgia. His NFL career lasted only two years due to knee injuries.
Malcolm Mitchell, bestselling author of The Magician’s Hat and My Very Favorite Book in the Whole
Wide World, is the rookie who helped the New England Patriots win Super Bowl LI. He’s also the founder of an initiative called Read with Malcolm, which introduces book ownership to students, and works to improve literacy in schools.
Malcolm’s Share the Magic Foundation promotes the benefits of reading to kids in underserved communities. As the New England Patriots Summer Reading Ambassador, he encourages summer reading. He lives in Atlanta, Georgia.
Mitchell was not a strong reader when he began college, then reading only at a middle school level, but grew to love reading; even joining a women’s reading club and promoting literacy among youth. He is more proud of his reading accomplishments than of making it to the Super Bowl.
In 2016, Mitchell released his first book, The Magician’s Hat. This children’s picture book features David, the Magician, who loves to perform magic. David knows the magical power of books, which can explore dreams and develop creativity.
