Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., born Michael King, Jr., was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. He lived with his parents Martin Luther King, Sr. and Alberta Williams King and two siblings, Christine and Alfred Williams Kings. King was a graduate of Morehouse College in Atlanta Georgia where he earned a degree in 1948. Dr. King continued his studies at Boston University where he earned a doctorate degree in theology in 1955.
In 1953, while attending Boston University, Dr. King met and later married Coretta Scott. Dr. King and Coretta later became parents of four children, Yolanda King, Martin Luther King III, Dexter Scott King and Bernice King. On March 29, 1968, Dr. King went to Memphis, Tennessee to support black public works employees who were on strike for higher wages and better treatment. On April 3, 1968, Dr. King delivered his “I’ve Been to the Mountain Top” speech at the Church of God in Christ. Dr. King was booked in room 306 at the Lorraine Motel where on April 4, 1968, he was assassinated. Dr. Luther King Jr. will always be known as leader during the civil rights movement, where he pushed for non-violence, inspired by his Christian beliefs and non-violent activism of Mahatma Gandhi.
