The 12th President of Raleigh’s Saint Augustine’s University Dr. Irving Pressley McPhail has died from COVID-19. The university made the announcement Thursday (Oct 15). McPhail had only been on the job for three months.
According to the university, McPhail had the virus a week and before he was admitted to the hospital. Officials say he was improving and was expected to recover. And then suddenly he took a turn for the worse and died.
Contact tracers determined McPhail did not get infected on campus.
University staff says McPhail was student-centered and was a true transformative leader. As the university began to reopen during the COVID-19 pandemic, university officials say McPhail was adamant about making sure students followed safety and health guidelines.
Dr. Maria Lumpkin will serve as Interim President.
