NC Voters Already Having Issues With Mail-In Ballots
North Carolina voters have been turning in mail-in ballots and have already had problems. Since the pandemic, there has been a surge in the number of requests for mail-in ballots. North Carolina will mail out 600,000 requests for mail-in ballot Friday, September 18. But, the verifying signatures have become an issue with some mail-in ballots.
The state’s board of elections says about 2% of some 10,000 absentee ballots had been rejected because of signature problems. The rejection rate was higher for Black voters, nearly 7%. A new mail-in ballot will be sent to those voters in N.C. whose ballots are invalidated.
The problem with mail-in ballots is even worse in the Black and Hispanic communities. A study out of the University of Florida found that Black and Hispanic voters in Florida were twice as likely to have their ballots reject as White votes. And younger voters were more likely to have their ballots rejected than older voters.
The fighting is well underway across the country over signatures for mail-in ballots. Both Democrats and Republicans have lawsuits on how signatures are evaluated and if voters can fix the ballots if they get rejected. For Republicans, they want strict signature matches. Democrats, want to relax the rules and let people prove who they say they are even if their signatures have changed some.
