Jihan Woods, a doctor, and mother of twins does her best to make sure her boys see diversity in all aspects of life and that mentality led her to develop an app that helps African-American parents find a Black Santa.
Wood started a Kick starter for her Black Santa app finder, which raised $5,000 in 30 days and “Find Black Santa” was born. The app lists Black Santa’s in 35 states and Washington, D.C.
Terri Lipsey Scott, the executive director of Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American Museum in St. Petersburg, FL. says that people will drive up to an hour for pictures with their Black Santa.
“The turnout is incredible — there are so few options as it relates to the availability of having an African-American Santa,” said Scott. “That self-esteem element even in the holiday season is so important.”
