Sony To Release Kirk Franklin Biopic
Sony is readying a forthcoming biopic about megastar gospel singer Kirk Frankin.
The film is being produced by former Sony executive DeVon Franklin via his Franklin Entertainment imprint, reports Deadline. (DeVon and Kirk are not related.)
Kirk Franklin will serve as an executive producer of the currently untitled film through his label Fo Yo Soul Entertainment.
The film will follow the 14-time Grammy Award-winning artist from his childhood through his rise to fame as a huge gospel star, while also battling his demons in the process.
Brian Ivie (The Drop Box), who most recently wrote and directed the Emanuel, a documentary about the 2015 Charleston church mass shooting, was called upon to write the film.
Kirk debuted in 1993 with his first album, Kirk Franklin & The Family, which went platinum with over 1 million copies sold.
Kirk’s debut album was the first gospel record to ever do so. It also charted at No. 1 on Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart for 42 weeks.
Kirk Franklin is known for his hits such as “Stomp,” “Wanna Be Happy?,” “Looking For You,” “Revolution,” and “Hosanna.”
