Janine Davis/InstagramI took time out to travel this weekend to spend some quality time with my Mom in Greensboro. At first, I didn't think I had the time because I consulted FIRST with my calendar on my phone...because you know I'm 'busy.' I got 'things to do', meetings, conference calls, proposals to get out, calls to return, deadlines to meet, meetings to set up, emails to check. Then I thought, "Really, Janine? You have to check your PHONE to see if you can take time to hang out with your mom???!!" That's ridiculous! And I'm sure I'm not alone. Do you do that?
Then I thought am I really that BUSY?? I remembered an executive coach once asked me, "You're being productive, you're busy but are you making progress?" We are all busy, but where it is going, where is it getting you? Is your "busy-ness making IMPACT"? Are you sowing a seed, making someone feel better, inspiring or motivating someone? Is your busy-ness aligned with God's will for your life?
Then I thought, "Am I just addicted to being busy?" Afterall, it sounds good to say we have a long laundry list of 'things to do'. But am I making any progress, am I growing, am I learning more about myself or others.
When I reviewed my list of 'things to do', nothing could be more valuable, meaningful and impactful than spending time with my mom. We reminisced about past memories, where I used to hang out, where she grew up. We laughed, ate and enjoyed each other. I wasn't just busy, but I was progressing because I learned it's important to take time out of your 'busyness' and do what really matters. And I learned God wants us to use our time wisely. And with purpose - I saw God in spending time with my mom. And that brought me back to center and ultimately closer to God.
