I was reliving my youthful days after watching the 2017 BET Hip Hop Awards. I don't think too many people realize just how much of a critical role Miami's own Uncle Luke (a.k.a. Luther Campbell) played in hip hop. Most people know him as a forefather of turn-up music but he was so much more than that. He actually helped give hip hop a voice when he paved the way for the hip hop community to have the right to express themselves through their music without getting penalized or in Luke's case arrested for his lewd lyrics.

Nonetheless, Luke got the Lifetime Achievement Award at the BET Hip Hop Awards for being a pioneer of Southern rap. And he was a surrogate father for a number of young black males who have gone to be professional athletes or politicians in and around Miami.
