Berry, widely considered one of the pioneers of rock 'n' roll music, was known for his songs such as "Maybellene," "Roll Over Beethoven," "Rock and Roll Music," and "Johnny B. Goode."  He helped to refine and develop rhythm and blues into the major elements that made rock and roll distinctive with lyrics that focused on consumerism and teen life while showcasing guitar solos and showmanship that influenced rock music to this day.
