Charlotte Mecklenburg Library celebrates African American History Month in February

PNC Bank Presents Gantt After Dark

This event is presented by Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture at Levine Center. The first Gantt After Dark of 2017 starts the year off with a bang! February’s Gantt After Dark will focus on: THE ARTIST. Come indulge in artist talks, live music, food, painting, drawing, and short films.

Queen City Urban Art Showcase

Michael Calloway’s Create Amazing LLC is offering more family-friendly events! The Queen City Urban Art Showcase is free and open to the public. Innovative Works

When: February 18, 2017

Time: 7:30pm

Where: 701 N. Tryon St. Charlotte, NC

This is not a free event, but sounds fun! It’s presented by Charlotte Ballet at Patricia McBride and Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux Center for Dance, Charlotte Passion, intensity & movement. Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux created Innovative Works a contemporary ballet in an intimate venue. The first Innovative Works performance was in 1997, just after Jean-Pierre took over as artistic director. Twenty years later it is one of Charlotte Ballet’s most popular performances, now housed in the 200-seat theater at the Patricia McBride & Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux Center for Dance.

Bags 4 Bagless

The outstanding 16 year old student , Righteous Keitt who attends Philip O Berry Academy is founder of the non-profit: Bags 4 Bagless, and needs our help! The organization collects backpacks filled with daily necessities like, toothbrushes, blankets and more. The organization passes these items to the homeless in our community. Grier Heights Black History Festival

When: February 25, 2017

Time: 11am to 2pm

Where: Grier Heights Community Center

Let’s have fun celebrating Black History Month by working on projects that revolve around Black history beginning in Africa. Our first station will provide children with materials that help them create African face mask that depict Ethiopian royalty. Every station will work through history until we make it to the present. At the end participants will create a poster that states “I Matter,” which will be signed using every child’s hand print.

Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) – 2017 Men’s & Women’s Basketball Tournament is calling Charlotte home for more than a decade. The well anticipated event is comprised of 12 Historically Black Colleges and Universities, the Tournament will tip off is at Bojangles Coliseum from February 20-21, 2017 and then move to Time Warner Cable Arena February 22-25, 2017. Do You Have A Prom Dress To Donate?

When: Now through February 28, 2017

Where: ImaginOn – The Joe & Joan Martin Center, 300 E. Seventh Street, Charlotte

Girl Talk Foundation, Inc. is asking for public donations of gently used or new prom attire, sizes 0-26, including bridesmaids, cocktail and formal dresses. Your dress will be donated to high school girls who are not able to afford to buy their own. Donate your dress during the dress collection until Feb 28, 2017. If in need of a dress you’ll have until February 28, 2017 to register for Girl Talk Foundation, Inc.’s Prom Project. The big event day on March 4, 2017 will take place at ImaginOn: The Joe & Joan Martin Center. During the event, girls can choose a prom dress and accessories at no charge. Did you know that girls attending Girl Talk Foundation teaches lessons on social etiquette, dating safety and offered other resources to make milestone occasion memorable. Ultimate Step “Afrika” Event

Experience the world’s first professional company dedicated to stepping, an art form born from African-American fraternities and based in African traditions. Repticon Charlotte Reptile & Exotic Animal Show

Female First Responders Open House

When: March 25, 2017

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Recruiting Division will be hosting a “Female First Responders Open House” for the public. Female representatives and Recruiters of local first responder agencies will be at the event to provide career insight and information on the application process . Agencies in attendance will include the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department, Charlotte Fire Department, Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, Mecklenburg EMS Agency(Medic), NC Highway Patrol, and various Military branches. Recruitment Background Investigator Grant will be available to speak with various media outlets regarding this upcoming event and the importance of women first responders. FREE Yoga Class For Cancer Patients & Caregivers

Yoga for Life is offering the gift of yoga with free weekly Yoga classes for cancer survivors and their caregivers. Yoga for Cancer classes is specifically designed to meet the challenges of cancer patients and survivors. They take place on Mondays, at 5:45 p.m., starting April 4th, 2016, and Fridays at 11 a.m., starting April 1st. Pre-registration is required.
