We have just kicked off 2017, goodbye 2016 you were a year of unpredictability.  In 2016 we saw a very ugly side of America during the presidential election period.  In our beloved city of Charlotte we felt civil unrest after HB2 and the Keith Scott Shooting.  Many took to the streets to protest peacefully; civil disobedience.  As we approach Martin Luther King Jr Day, it’s a great time to reflect on where we have been and where we as a city want to go.

Martin Luther King Jr Day is an American federal holiday marking the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. It is observed on the third Monday of January each year, which is around King’s birthday, January 15. The holiday was lobbied for soon after his assassination.  Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983 and it was first observed in 1986.

Dr. King was considered the leader of the Civil Right Movement.  He successfully argued civil rights of all Americans on the state and federal level.  A Nobel Peace Prize recipient, Dr. King led the marches on Washington and Selma to Montgomery.  He fought furiously for equals rights for African Americans, really any minorities who were discriminated against base off the color of their skin.  Toward the end of his life he expanded his protest to cover uplifting the poor and the  protesting the Vietnam War.  Dr. King was assassinated on April 4th, 1968, he was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Medal of Honor
